Here at Eden Hills Kindergarten we believe that it is never too early for children to learn about their environment. Sustainability is a priority in our curriculum and our learning environment.
With the exception of the veggie and sensory gardens (which have drip irrigation), all plants at Kindy can survive on little or no watering once established.
This year we are working on a project called "Beyond the Gate, Explorers of the Bush Block". This involves exploring the block below the Kindergarten and conducting flora and fauna audits.
We are a WOW centre (Wipe Out Waste) and we are teaching the children what it means to “rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle”. The children all contribute food scraps to our worm farm.
With a grant from The City of Mitcham, we have constructed a community recycling station for those hard-to-recycle items, incorporating a colourful mural that the children helped design. On a smaller scale, use of our ‘swap and donate’ table to recycle and reuse household items is widely utilized by the kindergarten community.
Kindy provides fun ways for children to practise positive environmental behaviours everyday. Enjoyable interaction with the environment promotes environmentally responsible choices and actions.
